Inspired by the giving spirit of his daughter Tracy, Samuel Rector resolved to become a mentor for the Road Back to Life. Sam credits luck and fortune for having the opportunity and means to complete advanced degrees before becoming a kidney patient. Along his academic journey Samuel picked up skills in research, teaching, and self-efficacy.

His past experience in research lent well to kidney failure simply because he was able to find information and resources that others may not have been able to. He did, however, recognize that others were not as fortunate as he.

With his experience as a teacher, he knew that he could help educate other kidney disease patients about the ins and outs of kidney disease, dialysis, and transplant.
